The Power of Prayer (6/3/18)

The Power of Prayer

James 5:13-18

13 Is anyone among you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone cheerful? He should sing praises. 14 Is anyone among you sick? He should call for the elders of the church, and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up; if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect. 17 Elijah was a human being as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the land. 18 Then he prayed again, and the sky gave rain and the land produced its fruit.

13 Is anyone among you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone cheerful? He should sing praises.

1) The priority of Prayer.

2) The People of Prayer

3) The purpose of Prayer

4) The example of Prayer

1 Ki 18:42–45 42 And Elijah went up to the top of Mount Carmel. And he bowed himself down on the earth and put his face between his knees. 43 And he said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.” And he went up and looked and said, “There is nothing.” And he said, “Go again,” seven times. 44 And at the seventh time he said, “Behold, a little cloud like a man’s hand is rising from the sea.” And he said, “Go up, say to Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.’ ” 45 And in a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain.

Elijah showed us how to pray:

  1. He prayed Biblically- He prayed knowing that if the people would pray and return to God, God would send the rain.

  2. He prayed Specifically- He prayed for something that He can see, Do we pray for things specifically, or is your prayers too vague?  If God answered your prayers would you even know it? God be with me today…is a vague prayer.

  3. He prayed Humbly- He put he head between his knees, it was a sign of humility.

  4. He prayed Repeatedly- He prayed 7 times until he saw a breakthrough, we need to keep praying even when we don’t think we are hearing anything in return.

  5. He prayed expectantly- When he saw something small begin to change he trusted God, because he knew God was a good God! If you are going to pray the prayer of faith, you better be ready for the answer.  If you are praying for rain, get the buckets ready, if you are praying for God to move, get ready to get involved with what He is doing!
