A long Dusty Road!!

“That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection…” Phil 3:10

Followers of the Lord Jesus Christ know that the resurrection of Christ is the most powerful event in history. All that we ascribe to, all that our life and worship is all about, is based upon the foundational piece that Jesus Christ rose from the dead.

I wonder how many believers experience that “resurrection power.” Would you like more of that power? Is there much that you would like to accomplish but you just don’t sense the capacity and strength to do it? Or maybe your life lacks the power to break the chain of sinful habits or to overcome fear, anxiety, or depression. I want you to know that whatever it is, Jesus Christ can change your life. His resurrection is the power to prove that. I know I wouldn’t want to live without it.

One week right after Resurrection Sunday, Jesus met two guys on the road to Emmaus who needed “resurrection power” to overcome one of the saddest weekends of their lives. They were walking home from Jerusalem, overwhelmed with the events they had witnessed. Jesus knew their hearts were aching and He wanted to bring His resurrection power to bear upon them, by the way, He wants to do that for you too.

Look at Luke 24:14: “Now behold two of them were traveling that same day. So they’ve left the place Jesus was crucified and they’re walking and while they’re walking they’re talking.” You can guess what they’re talking about. “Isn’t it so sad about what happened to Jesus? We had hoped so much but now it’s over.”

Then the cool thing happened—Jesus showed up with them on the road (v. 15). He breaks right into the middle and asks, “What are you talking about that makes you so sad?” (The text said they didn’t recognize Him.)

“Then Cleopas says” in verse 18, “ Are you the only one in Jerusalem that doesn’t know what happened?” Jesus sensed his need to talk so He said, “Fill me in …” Cleopas then described all the events of the weekend, ending with “but we were hoping it was He who was going to redeem Israel.”

But we were hoping… There’s the source of sadness right there. If you’re filled with sadness, then you’ve had your hopes dashed. Perhaps one time long ago you had diagrammed life as one way and now you’re standing over plans that have gone south. If you honestly could say, “I’ve got some real disappointments with my life,” then you need that same touch from the Lord—notice how He meets these men.

They say, “The women saw Him alive but we haven’t and we’re just not sure . . .” Then Jesus says to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets.” In other words, “Guys, it happened just how Jesus said it would. He said He would rise again and He did.” “Then Jesus expounded to them beginning with Moses all things concerning Himself.”

(I’d like to buy that tape!) Wouldn’t it be so great to hear Jesus explain all the Old Testament references about Himself? As they drew near their destination, they didn’t want it to end so they invited Him in for dinner. So He sat at the table with them and took the bread, blessed it, and broke it, all of a sudden, “Déjà vu!”, they remembered. “They knew Him, ” verse 31 says.

Somebody once said to me one Sunday, “I’ve been coming to church for years, but now finally, for the first time in my life, I really understand who He is.” You too may have heard a lot of Jesus talk, but have you ever recognized Him for who He is?

I love verse 32. After Jesus left they said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us when He talked with us on the road and while He opened the Scriptures to us.” “Wasn’t that wonderful?”

Some of you need that same touch spiritually. Your life is dry and you need that burning in your heart again that you’ve lost, or maybe never have known that. He wants to touch you so your heart burns with a love for Him and all of that sadness is burned away.

That’s what happened to these guys. “So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem” (v. 33). A minute ago it was too late for Jesus to keep going and now these guys are so fired up that they walked seven miles back to Jerusalem late at night to find the disciples and say, “It’s true! The Lord is risen.”

You may ask, How can I access that kind of resurrection power in my life? Do what these guys did: take Him at His Word. Believe what He said .
. .
…about salvation. “I am the way, the truth and the life…” (John 14:6). If you’ve never embraced Christ as your Savior, that’s step one for you.

…about joy in the midst of pain. Jesus had a lot to say about that. “These things have I spoken to you that in me you will have peace” (John 16:33).

…about the power Jesus gives us to depend on Him. John 15:12-14, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”

Bottom line: The most powerful event in history is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. I’m telling you this for one reason— you can know this power in your life. You can. Believe what He said, embrace Him as your Savior and learn, as I’m learning, what it means to walk and follow Jesus, risen from the dead. “…to know Him is life eternal” (John 17:3).

Walk Worthy,
Pastor Rick
